My competitors are using Creative Commons as a backlink. Does anyone know the proper way to go about this?

Creative Commons is a licensing agreement for (usually) software of some sort. The agreement to use that software is that you get it for free, but you must credit (with a link) the person/company that created the software. Sooooo.... for this to work, you'd need to create a widget or something that someone might want to use on their web site, market the heck out of it to get people to put it on their site, and hope they don't add a nofollow tag to your link. Honestly, unless you have a great idea for some killer widget/web app that will automatically go viral, you could take the time and effort you'd spend developing and then promoting the app and just promote your web site and get links instead.
