As a newbie to the SEO world, I get the view from a lot of SEOs that Google requires conversational writing? How does one adopt this approach bearing in mind the need for proper Keyword research?

Think more about "natural" writing. Plug your keywords in as if you were reading something and the keyword didn't look blatantly obvious. Keywords are definitely still a thing, no matter what anyone tells you. Just focus on placement of the keywords and that should help start you off in the right direction!
